A group of nearly 50 West Point graduates has signed onto a letter endorsing Republican David McCormick for Pennsylvania’s open Senate seat, one of the most closely watched races in the nation.
Among the prominent names on the document, which was first shared with POLITICO, are Paul Mango, deputy chief of staff for policy at the Department of Health and Human Services under former President Donald Trump; Tony Guzzi, CEO of EMCOR Group; and Joseph DePinto, CEO of 7-Eleven.
“As graduates of the United States Military Academy, the West Point creed of Duty, Honor, Country, and the values of loyalty, respect, selfless service, integrity, and personal courage reinforced at West Point and in the US Army, helped to shape who we are today,” the letter reads. “These ideals are needed now in our country more than ever, particularly in Washington, D.C.”
The McCormick campaign is releasing the letter hours before the first televised debate in the GOP primary where the former hedge fund CEO will square off against his chief primary opponent, Mehmet Oz. McCormick has sought to demonstrate that his campaign is still gaining momentum despite the fact that the celebrity doctor received the coveted endorsement of Trump earlier this month.
Trump announced Monday that he is holding a rally in Pennsylvania where he will campaign for Oz on May 6.
McCormick has attempted to position himself as the national security candidate in the race. His ads have highlighted the fact that he is a West Point graduate and Iraq war veteran and called him “battle-tested, Pennsylvania true.” Mike Pompeo, former secretary of State under Trump, held a rally with McCormick in the state last week.
“Conservative leaders, national security experts and prominent military voices support Dave McCormick because they know he is the senator Pennsylvania and our country needs to deal with the growing security challenges facing our great nation,” said McCormick spokesperson Jess Szymanski.
Pennsylvania’s primary is May 17. Other Republican Senate candidates include conservative commentator Kathy Barnette, former Trump ambassador Carla Sands and real estate developer Jeff Bartos.
