A special election next month for a House seat in the Hudson Valley, including Poughkeepsie, may serve as an indicator of what issues resonate with voters ahead of the midterm elections in November.

This Sept. 25, 2009 photo shows a city view of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., seen from the Walkway Over the Hudson. The rusty old rail bridge high above the Hudson River gets a second life this weekend as a walkway offering the public a bird's-eye view of the Hudson Valley. The Walkway Over the Hudson opens as the most novel of state parks on Saturday. The park is a 1.25-mile smooth concrete walkway lain on a rail span more than 200 feet high, or about the height of a 20-story building, made for strolling, running or biking. (AP Photo/Mike Groll)
